OTHER SURPRISES IN THE RANKINGS

BP wasn’t alone in plummeting in the rankings. Since the 2013 rankings, the Boston Consulting Group has dropped from #5 to #19, while Deloitte fell from #8 to #20 over those same period. And Capital One has plunged from #6 to #22. So what’s happened to these distinguished programs?  For starters, their index scores have all dropped between .162 and .311 (though each averages higher than 9.0 on a 10-point scale).

Stott tells Poets & Quants that each internship program fell for different reasons. “Since 2013, for BCG, the greatest drop in score was in Quality of Life, though Compensation & Benefits also fell. Even though the rating for Employment Prospects went up since last year, it wasn’t enough to compensate for the other lower scores.” He adds that Deloitte’s drop stems from a lower quality of life score, adding that compensation has also slipped since 2013. In the case of Capital One, a variety of forces drove down their internship ranking. “Employment Prospects fell substantially from 2013 to 2014, and Career Development fell too, though not as dramatically. Then, between 2014 and 2015, Compensation and Interview Process fell, pulling the overall average lower.”

The Westar Energy Internship Program was the biggest riser over the previous year, jumping from #20 to #12 (a .384 score increase). Aside from the Boston Consulting Group and Capital One, the biggest decreases came from Eide Bailly (-13), the Emma Bowen Foundation (-19), and ConAgra (-15), with scores sliding from .139 to .274.

Some highly-regarded internship programs, such as those run by Bank of America or McKinsey, didn’t submit surveys, making them ineligible for the rankings.

In specific industries, the top internship programs were found at these firms: Elliot Davis (Accounting), Bates White (Consulting), Evercore (Investment Banking), Anadarko Petroleum (Energy), Kohl’s (Retail and Consumer Products), AT&T (Media and Telecommunications), and Northwestern Mutual (Financial Services).
