What’s It Like To Be An Intern At Saks

Projects of Her Own

To this end, Apollo says she’s been given the opportunity to flex her own creative muscle and problem solving for Saks. “I’m in dress collections so the buyer was interested in seeing which trends were in for this year’s prom season. Using “#prom,” I was able to incorporate social media to investigate popular trends then I created a board to visually show the trends.”

“I also did another project where the buyer wanted to see the top ranking bridesmaids dresses in five focus stores. So I made her a visual of the best and worst sellers. It was interesting for her to see which styles may be selling in one store versus another, and it helped her identify transfer opportunities within the company.”

What Stern Taught Me

As her internship comes to a close, Apollo looks back and feels she was adequately prepared by Stern for her experiences at Saks. “I think it’s been really important to have that strong business foundation from classes at school. From finance to marketing, this strong foundation was crucial.”

But it’s the luxury marketing class she took during her junior year that stands out the most. “Marketing for a luxury brand is different than the typical marketing you do. I think the luxury marketing class really helped me understand what it takes to build a luxury brand and a luxury image. It’s all about exclusivity and heritage.”

Looking Ahead

With six internships now under her belt, Apollo’s plan heading into her final year at Stern is to simply focus on graduating. “I’m in the homestretch now.”

On Emily’s last day of interning, she’ll endure an entire eight-hour day of interviews from which Saks will let her know within a month if she has a full-time offer. “I do know this experience with Saks has solidified my interest in working in retail and I’d love to stay in New York City after graduation.”
