Wharton China Business Society Banned For Hazing

Wharton School of Business

The Wharton China Business Society has been banned from the University of Pennsylvania campus for next two years after an investigation concluded that hazing was involved in a mandatory activity for new members. First reported last month by The Daily Pennsylvanian, the club was investigated after an October 13, 2018 “quiz activity” that involved drinking, and that was required of all incoming members.

The group was one of 15 at the University of Pennsylvania to be investigated by the Office of Student Conduct between 2014 and 2019. Joined by a group of fraternities and sororities, Wharton China Business Society’s October event was ruled to have violated the university’s Anti-Hazing and Alcohol and Other Drug Policies.

“During a required event on October 13, 2018, new members engaged in a quiz activity that included drinking. OSC sent findings to The Wharton School for sanctioning,” the report reads. “Organization was disbanded for two years. All upcoming trips and conferences were cancelled. Board members were required to write apology letters to new members.”

NO COMMENT FROM STUDENTS, ADMIN

According to The Daily Pennsylvanian, Emily Zhao, president of the Wharton China Business Society and a junior at Wharton, did not respond to multiple requests for comment. Wharton Media Relations Director Peter Winicov also declined to comment, the report says.

“The OSC’s practice is not to comment on incidents. However, in general when working with student organizations, the OSC works with the appropriate offices on campus to determine sanctions and next steps,” OSC Director Julie Nettleton wrote in an email to The Daily Pennsylvanian.

“Sanctions are determined on a case-by-case basis depending on the relevant details.”

SCHOOL CRACKS DOWN ON HAZING

According to The Daily Pennsylvanian, the University of Pennsylvania has cracked down on hazing practices recently. Amon other incidents, the university’s only Asian-interest fraternity, Lambda Phi Epsilon, was kicked off campus late last year after being suspended by the national chapter following an investigation that revealed significant hazing.

Also last fall, the University’s Alpha Epsilon Pi chapter received four academic sanctions after an investigation into a drinking game competition hosted at the group’s residence.
