Learning Outside The Classroom At Gies

Students at Gies College of Business in the Magelli Office of Experiential Learning.Learning by doing is a critical part of the DNA at Gies College of Business. The College pioneered the practice of prioritizing hands-on experience working on real-world projects, and that commitment continues today. The Magelli Office of Experiential Learning provides students with valuable opportunities to work on real client projects for Fortune 100 corporations, mid-sized and startup companies, and nonprofit organizations. Experiential learning at Gies is integrated throughout the undergraduate and graduate programs.

Every Gies student, regardless of their major, will gain experience working with a real client through Business in Action, the largest experiential learning course in the nation. Business in Action, which is part of the recently revamped business core curriculum for all undergraduates, introduces students to the complexities of business by working on a real organizational problem with an actual client. Students will work with a client to identify, analyze, and present recommendations to solve an organizational problem. Students learn to apply problem-solving skills to uncertain situations as well as build and manage a professional team.

Students also have the opportunity to take their experiential learning even further with Gies-sponsored organizations like Illinois Business Consulting, which is the world’s largest professionally managed, student-run consulting organization. The Origin Ventures Academy for Entrepreneurial Leadership (OVAEL) gives students an opportunity to engage in a cutting-edge, collaborative environment where fresh ideas come to life. OVAEL programs include iVenture Accelerator, which helps students with the resources they need to launch breakthrough startups; Illinois Social Innovation, which works with students to launch impactful social ventures; EntreCORPS, which provides strategy consulting to early-stage ventures and startups; and Entrepreneurs Without Borders, which focuses on assisting in subsistence marketplaces around the world.

If you’re pursuing a career in finance, the Golder Academies offer advanced academic and career-building opportunities through professional development activities, on-site finance firm visits, networking opportunities, and advanced technical training. Real hands-on experience means Gies students graduate more prepared for the real world, more prepared to add value from day one, and more prepared to succeed in their career.
