How To Use High School To Prep For College

Expert Breaks Down College Admissions Trends

The COVID-19 pandemic completely upended college admissions—from the rise of test-optional policies to new essay prompts.

Dr. Aviva Legatt, founder of Ivy Insight and contributor at Forbes, recently highlighted some of the top college admissions trends for 2023 and what they mean for students.

TEST-OPTIONAL ADMISSIONS

One of the college admissions trends we’ve seen in recent years is the shift toward test-optional admissions. Today, nearly 96% of colleges do not require test scores for admissions. Many colleges making the switch argue that standardized testing may not be the best predictor of college success, especially for underrepresented students who may not have the same access to test prep and tutoring.

Yet, more recent studies have come out arguing that test-optional policies may not effectively address equity issues. Some reports have claimed that test-free admissions actually make college admissions more subjective.

For the time being, however, Legatt says students should expect to take standardized tests as having a strong score can only help your admission.

“At this time, I advise students to take standardized tests and to only submit the test score if is above the middle 50% of pre-pandemic test score averages,” Legatt says. “Limited data from admissions offices shows submitting a high test score can help students stand out relative to peers.”

EARLY ADMISSIONS

Another trend is the rise of early admissions. Roughly 50% of applicants apply via early action or early decision as early admissions typically yield a higher chance of acceptance.

Legatt recommends students to consider applying early, if they’re set on attending a particular school.

“Where possible, I advise students to apply to one Early Decision 1 school (binding admission policy, roughly November 1 deadline), and, if necessary in the event of denial, to one Early Decision 2 school (binding admission policy, roughly January 1 deadline),” Legatt says. “Pursuing Early Decision is the best way to demonstrate your interest in a particular college and assure highest consideration in the pool.”

RISE OF DIRECT ADMISSIONS

Direct admissions is a relatively new admissions process that allows students to be accepted into a college before having to submit an application. Legatt says direct admissions provides a new pathway to college that applicants should consider.

“While students do not know which colleges will reach out as a result of direct admissions, students are advised to submit their information and see what offers they receive from colleges,” Legatt says. “You may find a great scholarship or a hidden gem because you have gone through this process.”
