Higher education world is far from uniform. Each college possesses its own strengths and serves a distinct slice of the student population. Some are more competitive, and some are more inclusive.
When you zoom in on the schools that are most competitive, a few names stand out. A new nationwide analysis from grading platform Essay Grader AI found some answers using data from the U.S. Department of Education’s College Scorecard. They considered a whopping 933 colleges, weighing their median SAT and ACT scores across six equally weighted metrics – reading, math, and writing for both exams.

Harvard University claimed their top spot for most competitive school with a flawless score of 10.00. This university has been around since 1636 and continues to attract students performing at the absolute peak of standardized testing.
Just behind it was Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering, a small but fiercely innovative institution in Massachusetts. With an impressive score of 9.90, Olin earned their place. This school is known for serving engineers who thrive on solving complex problems and building real‑world solutions.
Sharing third place with matching scores of 9.89 were the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University – two northeastern Ivy League powerhouses that share both an urban center and demanding academic requirements.
