For today’s college‑bound students, career preparation is a must. With a tightening job market and employers raising the bar on early‑career skills, students are increasingly choosing schools that can help them hit the ground running.
The Class of 2026 is entering one of the toughest job markets in years, says Lindsay Ellis with the Wall Street Journal. Especially as employers lean more heavily on candidates with internship experience and job‑ready skills, the Washington Post‘s Dr. Svenja Gudell says the current environment is cautious, selective and uneven. Gudell says that employers are scrutinizing early‑career applicants more closely and weighing every new hire against economic uncertainty.
With the job market closing in, students will likely be seeking schools that can give them the strongest shot at landing a career. Lifestyle magazine Town & Country recently named 15 colleges with exceptional career‑prep programs, chosen for their national reputation, deep experiential learning, strong outcomes, early advising, and campus‑wide commitment to career readiness. The list includes a mix of liberal arts and research institutions — and excludes the Ivy League schools.

NORTHEASTERN, WILLIAM & MARY, AND LEHIGH
Zooming in, three schools stand out for their overall strength.
The first is Northeastern University. This school is quite competitive, admitting just 5.62% of applicants to its Boston, Massachusetts, campus. Its D’Amore‑McKim School of Business ranked 24th overall in our 2026 P&Q Best Undergraduate Business Schools rankings, and 26th in the Career Outcomes category this year. Northeastern is known for their signature co‑op model, which continues to deliver some of the strongest real‑world experience pipelines in the country.
The College of William & Mary is one of the most balanced schools on the list, with a 34.43% acceptance rate set in the historic Williamsburg, Virginia. Its Raymond A. Mason School of Business ranked 24th overall this year, and 38th in Career Outcomes this year in P&Q’s 2026 rankings. This school has strong internship participation and solid job‑placement rates that continue to distinguish the program.
Lehigh University follows with a more selective 28.96% admit rate in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The school has a consistent record of sending graduates into high‑quality roles, and its College of Business placed 34th overall in P&Q’s undergraduate rankings, and placed 35th in career outcomes.
