Dorm life is a big part of the college experience.

For many, this may the first time living without family and taking responsibility for things like laundry and cleaning. Yet, perhaps, more importantly, dorm life is central to making friends freshman year.

In this year’s Princeton Review ranking of best colleges, the Washington University in St. Louis snagged the top spot for “best college dorms.”

Students at Washington University in St. Louis have a number of housing options. First- and second-year students have access to the South 40 Residential Colleges, which includes ten residential colleges located in “South 40,” a small town with its own fitness center, dining facilities, technology center, meeting rooms, intramural fields, basketball and sand volleyball courts, recreation and game rooms, and music practice rooms, according to WUSTL.

SOME CHANGES IN RANKING COMPARED TO LAST YEAR

There were a number of changes from last year’s ranking to this year’s.

Scripps College, which ranked first last year, fell to the third spot in this year’s list. Rice University made a big jump to number 10 this year from number 16 last year. Both Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering and Rice University landed in the top 10 this year.

Another important thing to note, all the schools that ranked in the top 10 for “best college dorms” are private schools.
