What It Costs To Attend America’s Most Prestigious Universities In 2025

University of Chicago

The cost of attending America’s most prestigious universities is continuing its upward climb. For the 2024–25 academic year, the total annual expense at the top 10 national universities – ranked by U.S. News & World Report – now falls between $77,500 and $98,300. This is what Visual Capitalist found, using data from both U.S. News & World Report and the College Board.

TUITION AT THE TOP 10 COLLEGES

At the top of the list sits the University of Chicago, charging a whopping $71,300 in tuition alone, with total costs amounting up to $100K. Duke, Yale, and Stanford aren’t far behind, each calling for more than $67,000 in tuition and pushing total costs into the mid-$90,000s.

According to Melissa Korn at The Wall Street Journal, rising costs stem from competitive faculty salaries, pricey campus amenities, and major investments in research and tech infrastructure. Many of the top universities are innovating, which comes with a hefty price tag.

While these costs are high, there are other options for students. Some public universities are stepping up their game and offering honors programs such as the ones listed by the site Road2college, global internships, and competitive career pipelines at a fraction of the cost as an alternative.
