The Best College Towns of 2026

Where you spend your college years is a big deal. There’s cost and safety to consider, not to mention where you’ll have the most fun and enjoy the best amenities like food and culture. Let’s not forget the best education, facilities, and career opportunities.

Like with any huge decision, it helps to have data to look to when weighing your options. That’s what you can find in home search site RentCafe’s new 2026 report.

Now in the third year of ranking best college towns, RentCafe considered 244 towns across the country using the big factors that matter to students, including quality of life, affordability, and quality of education.

This year, the site made an important shift in their methods – it removed traditional reputation scores. Instead, RentCafe focused on retention rates which are a much clearer indicator of whether students are genuinely happy where they are or not.

Claiming first place was the town of Bozeman, home to Montana State University. Bozeman has held steady in front securing the No. 1 spot for the third year in a row.

Right behind in No. 2 was Pullman, anchored by Washington State University. This town has also secured the No. 2 for the third consecutive year.

Taking home third was a new one this year – Clemson, home to none other than Clemson University. What these three towns have in common is consistently delivering great overall experiences for their students year-after-year.

This year’s ranking also introduced a few interesting twists. Laramie (University of Wyoming) jumped an impressive 12 spots to land at No. 4. Also, Athens (Ohio University) and Amherst (University of Massachusetts Amherst) broke into the top 10. These towns have had better retention and graduation rates overall this year.

Zooming out, the West is dominating the charts this year. Half of the top 10 towns are in western states, where students have easy access to nature, cleaner air, and a slightly slower pace of life.

WHAT GEN Z WANTS IN A COLLEGE EXPERIENCE

Another factor in the rankings is considering who today’s students are. They’re Gen Z. The top three towns all support opportunities for balance and space to recharge when courses get intense.

Gen Z has proven to think differently than previous generations have about college. Prestige still matters, but it’s no longer everything these students are seeking.

Today’s students are asking themselves questions like: Will I enjoy living here? Does this place fit my lifestyle? What experiences will I want to have in the surrounding area outside of class? Emma Whitford and Janet Novack with Forbes have the same perspective, sharing that overall, this generation is looking for strong communities, social opportunities, and places that feel welcoming.

Also, because so much of life is lived online now, the look and feel of a campus and town seems to matter more than ever to Gen Z. Affordability is another major piece of the equation for today’s students. Towns like Bozeman and Pullman stand out because they offer a high-quality experience without the sky-high costs you might find in bigger cities. Lower tuition and a more manageable cost of living can make a huge difference, especially for students who are factoring in their financial future.

This year, the best college towns offer a mix of academics, community, lifestyle, and affordability that’s hard to beat.
