As Skills Gap Grows, Job Market For College Grads Hits 5-Year Low

Three From Toronto Rotman Join Canada’s Government AI Efforts

AI is everywhere. In fact, this tech is embedded in 78% of global businesses, according to Stanford’s Institute for Human-Centered AI 2024 index report. That’s over 260 million companies tapping into machine learning, predictive analytics, and generative tools to stay competitive.

As AI reshapes industries, Canada is pushing to be among the countries whose businesses are adapting in real time. The same is true of the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.

TORONTO ROTMAN JOINING THE FORCE

This fall, Canadian government officials launched the Artificial Intelligence Strategy Task Force – a 26-member panel charged with shaping the country’s adoption of AI. Their goal is to recommend policies to boost research, attract top talent, accelerate adoption, and commercialize innovations. Those in the task force are planning to design a national strategy due by the end of this year.

Joining this effort will be a few from the Rotman community. The school just announced that among the appointees is Rotman’s Prof. Ajay Agrawal, the leading Rotman expert on the economics of AI. He teaches across Rotman’s MBA and commerce programs and founded the Creative Destruction Lab (CDL), a nonprofit incubator that helps science-based startups scale.

Joining him are two Rotman alumni – Daniel Debow (JD/MBA ’00), chair of Build Canada, and Sonia Sennik (MBA ’17), CEO of CDL. Together, they plan to bring their knowledge and expertise to the task force, representing the kind of interdisciplinary leadership Rotman is known for.

For business undergrads, this will be a unique opportunity to witness how national strategy takes shape, with decisions and recommendations made by those within their own business school community.
