Outstanding Case Writer: Angaza: A Silicon Valley Journey
Vanina Farber and Shih-Han Huang, International Institute for Management Development (IMD)

IMD also won for Outstand Case Writer with this case about Angaza, a Silicon Valley darling that went from manufacturing solar-power lights and cookstoves to African countries to a pay-as-you-go technology company. Though it’s IMD’s 42 win overall, it is the first time it’s brought home the Outstanding Case Writer category award.

“Winning with this case is for us a validation of the value of storytelling as pedagogy, and also recognition for the key themes we touch on in the case. We try to use elements of story writing in the case so students can embark on a discovery journey. We strive to show, not tell,” the authors say.

Economics, Politics and Business Environment: Apple Watch (A) – The Launch
Lidija Polutnik and Megan Way, Babson College

This case examines Apple’s 2014 launch of its first smartwatch into a fast growing and increasingly crowded market. Would it be a game changer, or just another wearable gadget?

This is the authors’ first Case Award and the second for Babson College which won for Finance, Accounting and Control in 2002.

“We believe that economics education provides students with the necessary rigor and critical thinking skills that support excellence in decision-making. Using data and examples from real-world cases, where students are asked to solve business problems, facilitates integrated learning and improves effectiveness of economics education. It also reflects the types of multifaceted decisions students will be asked to make in their work,” the authors say.

Entrepreneurship: Developing an Effective Corporate Entrepreneurship System: The Case of the Robert Bosch Group (A)
Ann-Kathrin Leiting, Jana Thiel and Bart Clarysse, ETH Zurich

After investing in a new Corporate Innovation department to foster entrepreneurship, The Robert Bosch Group of Germany saw many of the new projects fail to materialize. This case looks at the causes of the low project survival rate.

“Our ambition was to offer contemporary perspectives that can spark new discussions on the ever-current topic of organising corporate entrepreneurship and corporate renewal. We are delighted to see the great uptake of this case in a number of institutions and are glad that our work can create meaning in the classroom,” the authors say.

This is the first Case Award for the authors as well as for ETH Zurich.
