Admissions Are More Competitive Than Ever Before: Here’s How to Stand Out
Submitted college applications increased by 21.3% between 2019 and 2022. With that rise in applications, college admissions are more competitive than ever before.
US News recently spoke to experts on what applicants should know about today’s competitive landscape and how they should approach their applications.
APPLY EARLY
With college admissions getting more competitive, it may be a smart strategy to consider applying early. It’s important to note, however, that Early Decision is binding, meaning you’ll be required to attend if accepted.
“The short answers: you should probably apply Early Decision, but you should only apply Early Decision to one of your dream schools,” Christopher Rim, CEO of Command Education and Contributor at Forbes, writes. “That way, you’re less likely to regret it or wonder ‘what if?’”
FOCUS ON ONE EXTRACURRICULAR
Extracurriculars play an important role in your college application. To stand out amongst a competitive applicant pool, experts recommend narrowing down your extracurriculars to one project, organization, or volunteer activity.
“Think about what’s going to allow you to stand out,” Rim tells US News. “How can you take that single activity to the next level to really demonstrate to the school that you are actually able to have an impact? Whether it’s a for-profit business that you’ve started or a nonprofit that you are developing programming for, what does that look like? Talk about that. Show your interest and authentic passion.”
BIGGEST OPPORTUNITY: YOUR ESSAY
Essays have always been integral in college admissions. But now, they may provide an even bigger opportunity to help you stand out amongst the competition. Experts recommend taking the time to perfect your essays and ensure your story is uniquely yours.
“I think the essays have become even more important than they were previously,” Bari Norman, co-founder and head counselor at Expert Admissions, an admissions consulting company, tells US News. “If a college doesn’t connect with you through your essays, it’s going to be hard to get in.”
