Every year, thousands of students embark on their college journey, eager to discover new interests, gain fresh experiences, and make unforgettable memories. While college life offers plenty of opportunities for personal growth and learning in safe spaces, it’s essential not to overlook physical safety concerns.
Curious which college campuses have the highest crime rates in the U.S.? Here’s a breakdown of the top ten.
Davidoff Law Personal Injury Lawyers recently pinpointed the most dangerous schools. They selected 30 prominent universities featured in Forbes’ rankings and adjusted the crime numbers to account for student population size, ensuring a fair comparison. Ultimately, they ranked the universities based on the number of crimes reported per student.
It's worth noting that high crime rates don't necessarily mean these schools should be avoided. Many universities are increasingly committed to student safety and are continuously pouring resources into campus safety.
Taking the lead as the most dangerous college was Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, where nearly one out of every ten students (9.89%) were affected by campus crime. The most frequent offenses at Bowdoin were burglary, liquor violations, stalking, and dating violence.
In second place was Dartmouth College, with a 7.46% crime rate. Despite having three times the number of students as Bowdoin, Dartmouth had the highest number of stalking cases (33) and 29 reported rape cases, which is significant for a top university.
Contrary to popular belief, some smaller institutions also face high safety challenges. Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, ranked third with a 6.51% crime rate on campus. Most reported incidents were drug-related and liquor violations.
