Birkenstock-Wearing, Tree-Hugging, Clove Smoking Vegetarians aren’t as rare a species as you might think, and they appear to gather at certain universities, united by their fashion sense and fondness of the natural world.

A question to consider is: Do the Birkenstock-Wearing and Tree-Hugging types congregate to these schools intentionally, or do these schools turn their students into the Clove Smoking Vegetarians they now are? It’s no secret that a university’s culture will influence the way its students turn out, and appealing or not, this particular reputation is definitely something to be aware of if you’re considering the schools below.

The Princeton Review rankings are based on a multi-question survey concerning students’ political persuasion, use of marijuana, religion, satisfaction with the student government, and level of acceptance of the LGBT community on campus. The list indicates the top 20 schools at which students identified as very liberal, highly accepting of the LGBT community, unsatisfied with the student government, and not religious.

By looking at the past six years of rankings at once, you can see which schools are a constant presence on the list. Only 36 schools have made the list in the past six years, and of them, eight were listed every year.

Of those eight schools, five of them – Bennington College, Bard College (NY), Sarah Lawrence College, Reed College, and the New College of Florida – were also listed in each of the last six “Most Liberal Students” rankings, in an unsurprising correlation.
