Wharton School of Business
The University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School is once again sitting at No. 1 in Niche’s annual ranking of the Best Colleges for Business.
The top of the 2027 list, however, has considerably more movement just below it.
Cornell University holds steady at No. 2, while Carnegie Mellon University jumps three spots to No. 3. Georgetown University climbs one spot to No. 4, Massachusetts Institute of Technology slips one to No. 5, and University of Southern California falls from No. 3 to No. 6.
University of Michigan makes its way into the top 10, climbing four places from No. 11 to No. 7. University of Georgia is No. 8, University of Florida holds at No. 9, and University of Notre Dame moves up two spots to No. 10. Florida State, No. 10 last year, drops just outside at No. 11.

Wharton’s repeat at No. 1 shouldn’t be much of a surprise. It also topped Poets&Quants’ 2026 ranking of undergraduate business schools — its eighth No. 1 finish since P&Q began ranking the programs — while tying MIT Sloan for the top spot in the latest U.S. News & World Report ranking. (U.S. News’ 2027 ranking for undergraduate business programs is expected later this month.)
The biggest changes to Niche’s ranking come after the top 10. More on that later.
RANKING PROGRAMS BY STUDENT PREFERENCE
Like other broad-based college rankings, Niche starts with a university-wide methodology and then allows users to drill down by area of study. Niche’s list is not limited to stand-alone undergraduate business schools, allowing it to capture a much broader universe of colleges where students can study business and related fields.
Prospective students can filter schools by specific majors as well as whether programs are offered online or on campus. They can further sort by net price, student body size, test scores, selectivity, religious affiliation, online friendliness, and other characteristics. Niche also offers filters aimed at veterans, international students, adult learners, and low- and middle-income students.
That customization is where Niche distinguishes itself from most of the major rankings. Instead of simply handing students a numbered list, it gives them tools to reshape that list around their own priorities.
HOW NICHE RANKS BUSINESS PROGRAMS
Niche’s Best Colleges for Business ranking combines federal data with student and alumni reviews and measures that attempt to capture both the strength and popularity of a school’s business offerings.
Its currently posted business-ranking methodology assigns the greatest weight to a school’s Overall Niche Grade, which incorporates academics, value, professors, diversity, campus quality, safety, and other elements of the broader student experience.
The posted factors and weights are:
- Overall Niche Grade (36.8%): A broad measure of the student experience covering areas such as academics, value, professors, diversity, campus quality, safety, and student life.
- Percent Majoring in Business (19.1%): The share of undergraduate students majoring in business.
- Business Program Demand (13.5%): Niche user interest in the business program compared with the size of the program.
- Business Student Surveys (10.5%): Student and alumni ratings of their experience in the business major.
- Business Research Expenditures per Student (7.7%): Business research spending divided by the number of full-time undergraduate business students.
- Percent of U.S. Business Graduates (7.7%): The program’s share of all business graduates nationally.
- Business Research Expenditures (4.7%): Total institutional spending on business research.
