If you’re looking for the epicenter of startup undergrad education in the U.S., don’t look to Silicon Valley or Boston. Shift your gaze to Houston, Texas.

For six consecutive years, The Cyvia and Melvyn Wolff Center for Entrepreneurship has been named the best undergrad entrepreneurship program by The Princeton Review and Entrepreneur.

The center at University of Houston’s Bauer College of Business has, in fact, ranked No. 1 nine times and has finished in the top two spots 16 of the last 18 years.

At Bauer, this top ranking is the result of years of sustained investment in entrepreneurship, strategic planning, and ecosystem building. Students at the Wolff Center don’t just learn how to start a business, they learn how to launch them, scale them, and sometimes sell them before graduation.

The program is powered by an ecosystem of support. That includes Bauer’s Program for Excellence in Selling, the Stimulating Urban Renewal through Entrepreneurship (SURE) Program, and the Office of Experiential Learning.

Bauer recently introduced new programs that combine technical skills with industry context. These include a certificate in artificial intelligence, a business consulting certificate with hands-on learning, a healthcare leadership certificate, and the selective Energy Commercial Program, which prepares students for commercial roles in Texas’ diverse energy sector.

And later this year, Bauer will begin a strategic planning process aimed at strengthening its bridge with industry.

“The moment is right for us to create our next shared vision,” Dean Xianjun Geng tells P&Q.

“Our students should feel confident that we will retain the special culture of Bauer College as we increase the value of their degrees by providing even more opportunity to build community, connect with employers, and apply what they’re learning in the classroom to make a difference.”

Q&A WITH XIANJUN GENG

In the following Q&A, Dean Xianjun Geng tells us what’s next for Houston Bauer, how they’re evolving with the times, and why Houston is the place to be.

What are recent and upcoming program developments and innovations that will enhance the experience of future students?

Dean Xianjun Geng

This is an exciting time of transformation at Bauer College, mirroring what we see across the world as amazing innovations challenge how we work and live. Changes in technology, the economy and policy demand that we closely examine institutions of higher education and respond to industry needs to deliver on our promise to provide students with the opportunity to build successful and fulfilling futures.

Although change naturally brings some uneasiness, at Bauer College, we strongly believe that every challenge is an opportunity. Houston is a city full of entrepreneurs and innovators, and we are working to leverage the area’s strengths to deepen our connection to industry through programs and practice-based education that will give them the tools to get hands-on experience before graduating and securing jobs and ultimately delivering value to organizations.

Strengthening the bridge between academia and industry is part of what will drive the college’s strategic planning process, which will begin later this year. The moment is right for us to create our next shared vision, and our students should feel confident that we will retain the special culture of Bauer College as we increase the value of their degrees by providing even more opportunity to build community, connect with employers and apply what they’re learning in the classroom to make a difference.

Any other notable news coming for 2025 that readers should know?

At Bauer College, we prioritize a forward-thinking curriculum that emphasizes critical thinking over trend-chasing. Our goal is to equip students with the skills to understand and evaluate emerging technologies, so they’re prepared for what’s next, not just what’s now.

To support this approach, we’ve recently expanded our undergraduate curriculum with new and upcoming offerings that give students both technical skills and industry context. This includes a certificate in artificial intelligence, designed to upskill students in AI project implementation and evaluation. We’re also creating more opportunities for students to tailor their degrees through industry-focused programs, like a business consulting certificate that offers hands-on, experiential learning, a healthcare leadership certificate that equips students with insights into the unique challenges of managing the healthcare sector, and the selective Energy Commercial Program, which prepares students for a wide range of commercial roles within the energy industry.

What are your program’s two biggest differentiators from other top undergraduate business programs? How do these prepare students for their careers?

At Bauer College, two full-service units work in close collaboration to support students throughout their entire undergraduate journey: the HUB for Student Success and the Rockwell Career Center.

From day one, the HUB sets the tone for the Bauer experience through personalized guidance and a focus on academic success. One key initiative is the Emerging Leaders Academic Success Program (ELASP), offered to both freshmen and transfer students in their first year. In the fall semester, ELASP provides a foundational overview of essential tools and strategies for college success, including study skills, time management and goal setting. In the spring, students are introduced to Bauer’s business student organizations — spaces for peer-to-peer learning, leadership development, academic support and community engagement. Many students go on to take active leadership roles in these organizations, continuing the cycle of learning and mentorship.

At the same time, the Rockwell Career Center plays a vital role in preparing students for life after graduation. One cornerstone offering is “Connecting Bauer to Business,” a required course developed in response to employer feedback. This hands-on class helps students confirm their major and career path while building the skills needed to succeed in internships and job placements. Weekly sessions feature direct industry involvement and emphasize collaboration, business ethics and critical thinking. Beyond the classroom, Rockwell’s career coaches provide year-round programming, from résumé and interview workshops to job search strategy and offer negotiation, ensuring our students are career-ready and confident in their professional journey.

What separates your graduates from other business school graduates?

Experiential learning is a cornerstone of Bauer College’s top-ranked programs, including the Cyvia and Melvyn Wolff Center for Entrepreneurship, the Program for Excellence in Selling, and the Stimulating Urban Renewal through Entrepreneurship (SURE) Program.

As a strategic priority, experiential learning is coordinated college-wide through our Office of Experiential Learning. This office ensures that every Bauer student has access to hands-on opportunities that bring business education to life, whether through internships, simulations or case competitions. It also provides systems and resources to bring industry partners directly into the classroom, while supporting faculty in developing and delivering experiential projects that connect theory to practice.

These opportunities are embedded across all majors and degree plans at Bauer, giving students real-world context for what they’re learning in class. For many of our first-generation and first-time-in-college students, this access represents something more: a chance to engage in experiences they’ve never had before, like consulting with real clients, pitching ideas to executives and competing in high-stakes case competitions. Students also have access to longstanding programs like Bauer in D.C., which provides housing and support for select students who secure full-time internships in the nation’s capital across industries such as business, policy and nonprofit leadership, helping them expand their perspective and build influential networks outside of Texas.

At the same time, organizations that partner with Bauer benefit from early connections to students who have already demonstrated grit, adaptability and the ability to solve complex problems, well before graduation.

These hands-on experiences also extend beyond Houston. Through Learning Abroad programs, Bauer students gain a global business perspective by studying and engaging with companies across Europe, Latin America and Asia, helping them understand cultural nuances and international markets firsthand. We also have reciprocal exchange programs with NEOMA Business School in France and Swansea University in the United Kingdom along with a unique partnership with the Asian Institute of Management, where we will welcome the first cohort of students from the Philippines to Houston next fall.

Explain the career services, programming and extracurriculars that give your students an advantage in career outcomes?

The Rockwell Career Center supports students through every stage of their career journey, from building foundational skills like making a confident introduction at a networking event, to mastering interviews, negotiating offers and navigating multiple opportunities. Our programming is tailored specifically for business students, with signature events like our three-day résumé workshop that draws more than 1,000 students to receive direct feedback and guidance from employers.

That support doesn’t end at graduation. We’ve recently expanded our services to include alumni career coaching, reflecting our long-term investment in the professional success of Bauer graduates.

When alumni look back on their time in your undergraduate business program, what would they consider to be their signature experience?

We asked a recent alumna directly to share her thoughts on this question.

“The signature experience Bauer offers is a well-rounded, experiential and deeply supportive environment where students grow both personally and professionally. It’s a place where you’re encouraged to chase your dreams and provided with the tools, guidance and opportunities to successfully launch your early career. What sets Bauer apart is the people — dedicated faculty and staff who show up with passion every day and classmates who quickly become lifelong friends and part of your support circle. The Bauer experience doesn’t just prepare you for a job. It shapes who you become.” -Veronica Herrera (BBA ‘21), Senior Associate, EY-Parthenon

What is the most underrated feature of your undergraduate business program, and how does it enhance the experience for your business majors?

One of the most underrated features of Bauer College’s undergraduate business program is the level of personalized support our students receive, especially first-generation college students, who make up a significant portion of our population. There is truly no other time in a student’s life when so many people are so deeply invested in their success.

From day one, our student-facing teams offer guidance, mentorship and practical support that go far beyond the classroom. What sets Bauer apart is not just the number of services available, but the people behind them, many of whom have served our students for 10, 15, even 20 years. That longevity brings a depth of knowledge and experience that translates directly into the quality of care and consistency our students experience.

This high-touch support helps students navigate college with confidence, discover career pathways and build meaningful connections, enhancing their entire undergraduate experience and shaping them into capable, career-ready professionals by the time they graduate. Programs like Bauer Honors take that support to an even deeper level, offering a close-knit academic community with smaller classes, faculty mentorship and research opportunities that prepare students to lead in both business and graduate study.

“One of the most underrated features of Bauer College’s undergraduate business program is the level of personalized support our students receive, especially first-generation college students, who make up a significant portion of our population,” says dean Xianjun Geng.

Which employers are the biggest consumers of your undergraduate talent, and what have they told you about your alumni that make them so special?

Employers consistently tell us that what sets Bauer graduates apart is their work ethic. One longtime member of our Rockwell Career Center Advisory Board summed it up best: “Bauer students come to work.” There’s no ego, no sense of entitlement — just a strong drive to learn, contribute and deliver results from day one. That grit and professionalism is what keeps top employers coming back, year after year.

For the Class of 2024, our leading undergraduate employers include PwC, EY, Deloitte, KPMG, Amazon, Oracle, BDO USA LLP, bp, ConocoPhillips and LyondellBasell. These companies value not only the technical skills of our students, but also the determination, humility and real-world readiness that define a Bauer education.

What else would you like readers to know about your program?

What truly sets Bauer College apart is our culture. The people who work here, whether in the classroom, advising office, career center or any other unit, are deeply invested in the college’s mission and legacy. Many have spent decades here, not because they have to, but because they believe in this place and what it stands for. That commitment is felt by our students every day, and it makes a difference. They’re not just names on a roster. They’re individuals with goals, stories and untapped potential.

At Bauer, student success is the heartbeat of everything we do. One of our longtime faculty members in the Program for Excellence in Selling, Randy Webb, captured it perfectly when he told me, “It’s not about what our students know. It’s about who they are.” And we’re here to help them become the very best version of that.

That support includes removing real-world barriers to ensure every student has the tools to succeed. When we realized that many of our students had never owned or couldn’t afford a business suit for interviews and networking events, the Rockwell Career Center launched the Suit Closet, a curated collection of new, dry-cleaned, donated suits that students can access free of charge. It’s one of many ways we help them show up with confidence, long before they’ve secured the job. Across Bauer, that same mindset drives our work: meeting students where they are, investing in who they can become and making sure nothing stands in the way of their success.
