WHAT DO I WANT TO DO?
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, I knew I wanted to work in healthcare. During my junior and senior years in high school, I worked part-time at a physical therapy clinic and found myself drawn to the clinical environment.
Throughout my time at Athletico, I came to the realization that healthcare isn’t going away, and I wanted to do something to help improve it. Even so, I knew I did not want to go to medical or PT school – I’ve never had what I’d call a “science brain.” What I did know was that I enjoy working with people and solving problems.
I decided to major in Finance and Business Analytics and started to consider consulting as a potential career path. As I researched the industry, Deloitte Consulting was one of the first firms that caught my attention. Not only is Deloitte a leading provider of consulting services for the life sciences and healthcare industries, but their breadth of clientele and variety of projects was appealing as I believed I could gain exposure and experience to different areas within healthcare.
HOW DO I GET THERE?

Evan Kalish is a senior at the Martin J. Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University double-majoring in Finance and Business Analytics with minors in Public Health and Economics.
In early fall 2023, I began the recruitment cycle for summer 2024 internships. Whitman’s Career Center was immensely helpful throughout this part of the process. I spent many hours with my advisor discussing my career path, refining my resume and cover letter, and preparing for interviews. I also began practicing consulting case study interviews and studied useful frameworks.
Additionally, I focused on networking with Deloitte practitioners to gain a deeper understanding of the company culture and role I would hold during my internship. Throughout the fall, there were numerous opportunities on campus to connect with Syracuse and Whitman alumni working at the firm. They hosted information sessions, tables at the career fair and in Whitman, networking events, and resume workshops. One particularly helpful event was a Deloitte Consulting info session held with Syracuse Delta Sigma Pi alumni. When interview time arrived, it was reassuring to see familiar faces on the recruitment team.
The interview process had three parts. First was a networking dinner: this was an opportunity to meet some of the interviewers and continue creating connections with practitioners. Next was a round one interview consisting of a 30-minute behavioral interview and a 30-minute case study. The next day was a round two interview with a 60-minute case study.
MAKING THE MOST OF THE EXPERIENCE
After a rigorous interview process, I was grateful to have secured an internship with Deloitte as a Business Technology Solutions Summer Scholar in their Chicago office. As my summer started, I was nervous as to whether I would enjoy working in consulting. Fortunately, this experience exceeded my expectations. I learned so much about the firm, how to thrive in client services, and real-world applications of finance. I had the opportunity to work on a project with one of Deloitte’s longstanding clients in the Consumer Health industry. The project involved implementing a financial planning and analysis tool called OneStream. It was very interesting learning about the client’s various financial functions, and what it takes to operate and thrive as a global business.
A huge part of my learning success is accredited to the practitioners on my team. Everyone was willing to take the time to teach me new concepts, give me feedback, and help me succeed at Deloitte.
Another focus of my internship was networking. During the 10-week program, Deloitte placed an emphasis on learning about the firm and its different offerings while creating connections with other practitioners. I focused my networking on meeting people who were doing work in the life sciences and healthcare industries and made many meaningful connections. Additionally, I had the opportunity to travel to Deloitte University for a Summer Scholar conference to meet other interns and practitioners.

IT WAS ALL WORTH IT
The success of my summer is truly attributed to the education, resources, and opportunities I received at Syracuse University. My classes prepared me with a strong foundation in finance, analytics, and critical thinking. Applying the knowledge from my coursework to the real-world client situations contributed to a deeper understanding of financial concepts.
Outside of class, joining student organizations on campus helped me build the soft skills I needed to thrive in the real world. Through Delta Sigma Pi, I learned how to navigate professional landscapes, how to craft interview stories, and how to build connections.
Looking forward, I will be returning to Deloitte Consulting as a Business Technology Solutions Analyst after graduating this spring!
