25 Best College Campuses In America & Their Qualities
Students are looking for schools that match what matters to them. Often times, that means balancing solid academics with practical value, a meaningful social life, and a campus environment where they feel they can truly connect with others.
“In addition to strong academics and enriching co-curriculars, what prospective students typically are seeking is a sense of community – a place where they feel they’ll belong,” says Tim Bono with Psychology Today.
Education search platform Niche recently released their 2026 Best College Campus rankings which spotlights the schools that are performing well across factors that matter most to today’s students.
Their rankings are based by both federal data with student feedback. Student surveys accounted for 50% of the score, and other factors like campus food, housing, and local area each received 15% of the total score, along with a 5% safety grade.

A CLOSER LOOK AT THE TOP THREE
At the very top of the list is UCLA, with an impressive overall A+ score. This school stands out in several key areas, earning A+ grades in academics, diversity, campus, and even its party scene.
“I am ecstatic to continue my journey developing my academic skills as a student on the pre-med track, in addition to pursuing a fruitful experience as a first-generation college student,” says an anonymous Sophomore on Niche. “My parents have always emphasized to take every opportunity, and I believe UCLA allows me to live by experiences and be aspiring for further education.”
Not far behind UCLA is Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, which landed in the No. 2 spot with an overall grade of B+. One of the largest private universities in the country, Liberty notched an A+ for its Campus and an A- for both its Athletics and Diversity. “Liberty University has boosted my spiritual, mental, and physical health so radically,” says an anonymous Freshman on Niche. “It has given me perspective on my life and aided me in my academic and life knowledge. I’m beyond grateful to be a part of this school – learning from amazing professors.”
In third place is California Baptist University, also in southern California, which earned an A- overall grade and continues the trend of strong campus environments. “Overall, my experience at California Baptist University has been amazing,” says an anonymous Sophomore on Niche. “Compared to all the campus field trips I took while exploring colleges, CBU stood out as the best campus I visited. The students are incredibly kind and welcoming. The professors are supportive, approachable, and genuinely passionate about their work and truly want to help students succeed. Overall, CBU has created an environment where students feel encouraged and supported.”
Regionally, more than half of the schools in the top 25 are located in the South. This was the most dominant region in the rankings. Surprising to some, the North had the least amount of schools in the top 25. “Students from the Northeast are heading South in record numbers, drawn by universities where sunshine, football and Greek life define campus life,” shares Sophia Compton with Fox News.
