If finding a state with the highest levels of educational equality is your goal, you’re in the right place! Education hasn’t always been equal, but cases like Brown v. Board of Education and laws like Title IX have helped break racial educational barriers over the years. Even so, equal access to education is still very much a work in progress.
“It is essential to ensure that all school districts receive sufficient funding, the latest technology, and equal opportunities for tutoring and extracurricular activities, regardless of their racial composition,” says WalletHub Analyst Chip Lupo. “This will help bridge the racial gaps in test scores and graduation rates, which will promote equal opportunities for higher education and employment in the future.”
Where is education the most equal in the United States? WalletHub analyzed all fifty states using key education factors like high school and college graduation rates, standardized test scores, SAT and ACT performance, and overall school success to determine which states offer the most racial equality in education. They measured racial equality in education by comparing the latest data for Black and white students. If Black students in a state scored the same or higher than white students on a given factor (like test scores or graduation rates), that state received the highest possible points for equality.
