What made Andrew such an invaluable addition to the Class of 2017?
“As Andrew Fogarty’s academic dean, I have had the opportunity to work with him over the past three-and-a-half years and have observed a mature, responsible young man who has worked diligently to achieve his academic goals. Andrew has excelled academically, majoring in Finance with a certificate in the Global Business Fellows program. More importantly, Andrew truly embodies the Jesuit idea of “men and women for others” and is a student that enriches the Georgetown community.
Andrew is a natural leader who takes pride in the extracurricular activities he chooses. Most of the activities he’s engaged in are centered on mentoring and service to others. For example, Andrew has led the McDonough Peer Ambassador (PA) program for the last two years. The PA Program is a mentoring program for new first year and transfer students. It helps link current McDonough undergraduates with new students to help as they transition into this new academic environment by offering them advice and support. Andrew knows that what makes the Georgetown community so strong are the people and the relationships that are built here. He wants each of his mentees to know that he is here to support them, help them succeed, and share in their joys and sometimes their sorrows. His genuine, caring nature is what sets Andrew apart.
In my role as Assistant Dean, I serve as the director of an alternative spring break (ASB) program for McDonough School of Business sophomores. As a sophomore, Andrew and seven other McDonough students spent their spring break in Philadelphia, Pa., tutoring and mentoring students at Cristo Rey Philadelphia High School (CRPHS). CRPHS is part of a nation-wide network of Catholic schools at which high school students attend school four days per week and work at a private company on the fifth day. In turn, the student’s employer pays a majority of the students’ tuition to the school. While at the high school, Andrew and his peers reviewed basic math and English skills with the high school students, delivered presentations on how to succeed in high school and college, and mentored the students. Andrew was one of the student leaders who was instrumental in this service experience succeeding, by helping my office with logistics, developing a video on college life for the high school students, and corralling the group through the week. I was happy to know we had a thoughtful and mature person to help lead the group. This ASB trip allowed me to get to know Andrew even better, outside of academics, and witness his commitment to others first-hand.
Additionally, as a junior, Andrew was instrumental in leading the McDonough-Hilltop Business Strategy (MHBSC). MHBSC is a nonprofit case consulting competition organized by Hilltop Consultants and primarily sponsored by the McDonough School of Business. The Business Strategy Challenge seeks to bring together teams from undergraduate universities from all around the world. Teams engage in a weekend-long competition during which they come up with unique and sustainable solutions to the client’s problems. Andrew was the student point person for the challenge and without his dedication and hard work, we could not have run a successful event.
Andrew Fogarty is a hard-working, exceptional young man. I have seen him grow academically but more importantly as a person while at Georgetown. I know he will succeed in all his future endeavors and make Georgetown and McDonough proud!”
