Meet Dyson’s 2025 Thoreau Planetary Solutions Scholars
As we face mounting challenges like climate change and sustainability, tomorrow’s workforce must lead with purpose, innovation, and a commitment to environmental stewardship. That’s why the Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management at Cornell University created their Thoreau Planetary Solutions Scholarship program.
Now in its second year, the scholarship program is part of a collaboration between Dyson and the Henry David Thoreau Foundation. It’s really more than just a scholarship – it’s a launchpad for action that’s empowering undergraduates to tackle environmental challenges through both creative and impactful business solutions.
MEET THE THREE SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS
This year’s 2025 Thoreau Planetary Solutions Scholars are Maitri Kovuru, Vansh Kakra, and Sienna Dutcher – sophomores, each with goals of leading with purpose. These three are each receiving a $5,000 stipend to support their summer internships in the green workforce.
Each of the scholars has their own goals. Kovuru is blending storytelling with strategic business thinking and will head to Washington, D.C. to explore environmental policy and corporate sustainability. Kakra is the founder of “Energy Connector,” and is on a mission to expand his solar energy initiative – Project Lokhandi – to power up 250 more rural students in India. Dutcher plans to use her economic insights and advocacy experience and will join ICF’s Innovation Incubator team to accelerate energy efficiency programs for major utilities.
Though it is a huge part of it, the scholarship isn’t just about financial support. The three students will have access to a full ecosystem of resources, including mentorship from faculty lead Dr. Trent Preszler, sustainable business field trips, monthly mentorship sessions, and a cohort-based learning experience. When all is said and done, the scholars will share all they have learned in a fall showcase event, where incoming Dyson freshmen will hear all about their experiences.
