Across the world, women are stepping into STEM fields in record numbers.

This is what major organizations like UNESCO, the UAE Embassy, the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), and the International Labour Organization (ILO) are reporting.

Fintech platform Prodigy Finance synthesized these reports to show a clear picture of just how women are reshaping this field.

THE COUNTRIES WHERE WOMEN HAVE THE MOST MOMENTUM

Women are leading the charge into STEM careers, and in several countries, they’re surpassing men altogether.

In the United Arab Emirates, women now make up 56% of STEM graduates at government universities, according to the UAE Embassy. This rise comes even as the ILO warns that women may face higher risks of job disruption as AI evolves. Instead of pulling back, women in the UAE are fearlessly pushing onward.

Despite challenges such as visa delays and global uncertainty, women in India continue to hold a strong presence in technical fields. According to NCBI, women now account for over 40% of India’s STEM graduates, placing the country ahead of many traditional education powerhouses. For context, women make up roughly 35% of STEM students in the U.S. and about 30–35% in the U.K., while much of the Middle East sees participation between 40% and 50%, says those at UNESCO.

In Germany, they had a high record of 36% female participation in STEM fields. This is an enormous milestone for a country once defined by male‑dominated engineering fields. This country’s pace may be slower than the UAE or India, but this is still notable momentum.

ACCESS, BARRIERS, AND SUPPORT

Artificial intelligence is a field that was once overwhelmingly dominated by men, but the World Economic Forum reports that women now represent 22% of the global AI workforce. That’s up from around 15% a decade ago. There is still a long way to go to reach parity, but the momentum is there. That’s undeniable.

Of course, interest in these fields doesn’t necessarily equate to equal access to women landing jobs in STEM fields. UNESCO data shows that while women make up about 35% of STEM students globally, participation depends on the financial support, resources, and systemic barriers that are in place in a given location.

“What’s becoming clear is that opportunity on its own isn’t enough. Progress will depend just as much on the support women get around them,” says Sonal Kapoor, Global Chief Business Officer at Prodigy Finance. “We can start by creating clear pathways, removing everyday barriers, and actively encouraging more women to step into STEM.”
