The College Degrees with the Highest ROIs

As college tuition continues to climb and student debt surpasses $1.63 trillion, families and students are scrutinizing the true value of a degree more closely than ever.

A recent report from Student Choice, drawing on data from The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and Georgetown University, shows which majors and career paths are most likely to pay off in the long run, and which might not live up to the cost.

Let’s start with the big picture. Among the most popular college majors, engineering holds a commanding lead when it comes to median wage returns, with an estimated 5-year ROI of over 326%. Computer science, nursing, accounting, and biochemistry also round out the top five, each posting strong salary trajectories in the early career phase. Business tied with biology for sixth place with a 231.9% ROI, proving its appeal as a practical, versatile field of study.

THE HIGHEST 5 YEAR ROI OCCUPATIONS

Even more insight can be taken through tracking how those degrees translate into actual jobs. In a deeper dive of 40 common occupations tied to these majors, some business-related roles stood out for their exceptional financial payoff.

Advertising and marketing managers came in hot with a 5-year ROI topping 511%, while public relations and fundraising managers weren’t far behind at 426%. Top executives, management analysts, and accountants all boasted ROIs above 260%, and even human resources specialists – sometimes overlooked in earnings charts – posted a respectable 221% return.
