Why AI Prompt Writing Is Becoming A Must‑Have Skill For Today’s Students
Generative AI has officially gone from a neat side tool to an essential that students must to know how to use.
A new nationwide study conducted on behalf of Northern Kentucky University surveyed 500 college students. It found a widening gap between what campuses teach and what employers are expecting.
“Employers are expecting new hires to come in with some AI literacy is a trend we are seeing nationwide,” says Lindsay Ellis with the Wall Street Journal. “They want their applicants to demonstrate AI fluency across all roles, not just across tech-based roles.”
The report shows that seven in ten students said they taught themselves how to write AI prompts, while only 18% reported that their college offers any kind of prompt‑writing or AI literacy course. This is quite low when you see students using these skills across most of the work they do.
A solid 65% of students have used AI to polish their resumes, draft cover letters, or prep for interviews. At the same time, a solid one-in-four have even seen “AI prompt writing” listed as a job requirement.
VARYING CONFIDENCE FROM TRADITIONAL & NONTRADITIONAL LEARNERS
What researchers found was a confidence split, with nearly half of nontraditional students – defined as online learners, career changers, parents who have returned to school, and part‑timers – saying they feel very confident writing detailed prompts.
The other side of the coin is that “traditional” students, while still engaged with AI tools, report lower confidence overall. This suggests that students with more varied life and work experience may be developing stronger prompt‑writing instincts through necessity, experimentation, and self‑directed learning.
The study’s authors say that higher education needs to put in some work to keep their students up to speed. NKU is working to close the gap by weaving AI literacy into its own curriculum. The university is expanding their faculty training around generative AI, built internal resource hubs to help students learn responsible prompt writing, and integrated AI‑supported assignments into several online programs.
